Have You Made Fire Cider? Check Out This Easy Recipe

When I first learned about fire cider as a teenager, I envisioned a dragon breathing out fire. Something about the name made me feel as if it was some magical drink that would make one breathe out fire. 

So what exactly is fire cider? Fire cider is a tonic made by infusing herbs, fruits, and spices in apple cider vinegar. Although the name was originally coined by an American Herbalist in the ’80s, infused vinegar tonics have been a popular herbal and folk remedy for centuries. From before the time of Christ, the Romans enjoyed a drink called posca which was made by infusing vinegar with herbs and adding a little water. Many believe that the sponge soaked in vinegar that was given to Jesus while he was on the cross wasn’t just vinegar but the Roman energy drink posca. 

So why would you want to make an infused vinegar tonic, like fire cider? This sweet, spicy and pungent tonic is used by herbalists all around the world to aid the digestive, immune and respiratory systems, especially during bronchial spasms, congestion, throat irritations and, seasonal allergies. 

“These spicy preparations are meant to stoke the fire of the immune system and bring heat to the digestive system and get everything fired up,” says Crystal Hamby, a faculty member in the Bastyr University Department of Botanical Medicine. source

The fun thing about making fire cider is that you can pretty much get as creative as you like and use whatever you have on hand to complement the main ingredients. No fire cider is complete without horseradish and mild or spicy peppers. You can use any peppers you have on hand. I’ve used cayenne peppers, habanero chiles, jalapeno peppers and, anaheim peppers. Don’t let a recipe stifle your creativity. The best recipe is the one that uses what you have readily available. 

“Fire Cider can be taken straight by the spoonful, added to organic veggie juice (throw in some olives and pickles — a non-alcoholic, health-boosting bloody mary!), splashed in fried rice, or drizzled on a salad with good olive oil. You can also save the strained pulp and mix it with shredded veggies like carrots, cabbage, broccoli, and fresh herbs to make delicious and aromatic stir-fries and spring rolls. We like to take a tablespoon each morning to help warm up or triple that if we feel the sniffles coming on. Dr. Kara Fitzgerald” source 

Now for my simple recipe. I used:

– 2 organic anaheim peppers ( I used these because its what I had on hand)
– 1 five-inch piece of organic ginger
– 1 six-inch piece of organic horseradish
– 1 large lemon
– 3 garlic cloves 
– 1 large bottle of organic raw apple cider vinegar
– 1 clean glass jar with a lid. It is important to sanitize the jar before using it. I wash with fragrance-free soap and then I place my jar in boiling filtered water for a few minutes. Place the jar on top of a towel so it can cool down before you use it. 

You can also add in orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, rosemary, thyme, and red onions. The sky is the limit.

Preparation:
To prepare all you have to do is finely chop up all of your ingredients. You can use a shredder for the ginger and horseradish. Once everything is ready, place all of your chopped ingredients inside of a clean glass jar and fill with apple cider vinegar. Make sure the vinegar is covering everything. Put the lid on and store your fire cider in a cool and dark place for a minimum of four weeks or a maximum of six weeks, making sure to give it a swirl every few days. If you are using a metal lid tear off a piece of parchment paper and place it between the jar and the lid. Doing this prevents a reaction with the vinegar should it touch the metal lid. 

Once the allotted time has passed simply strain your vinegar using a fine mesh strainer, muslin bag or nut milk bag. Add raw honey to taste, mix and store in a glass bottle inside of the fridge for 3 to 6 months. 

When I’m feeling tight in my chest or congested I take one tablespoon twice a day, but be sure to consult with your medical practitioner or clinical herbalist before deciding what dosage is best for you.
