Mamas, our kids need time to grieve too.

,

When our kids are cranky, sad or looking like they didn’t sleep well, our mama heart wants to help fix the problem. Almost without thinking, our love for our child pushes us into detective/doctor mode.

“Of course, you’re not feeling good, honey.
Did you drink enough water today? Have you had your minerals? You’re eating too much sugar and not enough protein and healthy fats. You haven’t been outside today. You’re not sleeping enough hours. Etc.…”

Although all of these things can be valid reasons, sometimes our kids just need a moment without our mama detective/doctor help.

Something I’ll never forget is when I heard a little one with Autoimmune Encephalitis say the following to his mama. 😭 ❤️

“I love you mom but right now I don’t want you to give me a scientific explanation for why I’m feeling this way. I don’t want solutions. I just want to grieve and be sad, without thinking about anything else.”

Let’s remember that our kids need space to breathe and process their pain and struggles both with and without our intervention.

This is especially important when kids have experienced debilitating health symptoms and or hardships due to mold exposure or a family tragedy. Their hearts and minds need to be given extra time to mourn.

They, too, will grieve, and it may look different from our grief. Although we may want to offer quick advice or a solution, let’s remember to sit with them and just listen, as we would with an adult friend who is hurting.

Sometimes, the best doctoring is done without bandages and without cures but with a warm embrace and a safe space on our shoulders.

May we always seek to show them grace as we shepherd the hearts of our children.

With love,
CFG

  1. Thank you for this post. It’s so easy to forget that we don’t need to (and can’t) fix everything all the time.
