Skip the store-bought wipes with fragrances and other harmful chemicals. You can make your own in less than an hour. You don’t have to be a baby to use these either.

Really, anyone who wants a nice, gentle non-toxic cleanser will benefit from making their own cleansing cloths and tossing the toxic wipes which are loaded with cancer-causing parabens and formaldehyde.

You will need:

  • Organic cotton pads. You can make your own cloth squares by cutting cotton cloth baby diapers into 3 equal parts and sewing around the edges.  If you are too busy to do that or your life is crazy like mine, just chop up a 100% die-free cotton tee shirt into 5inch by 7inch rectangles.
  • 5inch by 7inch glass dish with airtight cover or you can use a non-glass baby wipe dispenser like this one that is free from PVC, BPA, and phthalates. When traveling you can use a resealable waterproof cloth bag that replaces the traditional zip-lock bags or a travel-size baby wipes container.
  • 1 pint of distilled water
  • 1/2 tsp of organic calendula oil
  • 1 tablespoon of organic plantain oil or glycerite
  • 1/4 teaspoon of organic apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup of pure aloe vera gel (purchased or made at home) *avoid gels with dyes and additives

To make:

Mix your oils then add the distilled water, aloe, and vinegar.  Mix well then place your cloth pieces into your glass container and pour the mixture over.  Seal and use within one week.  Store any extra solution in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

I know this might seem time-consuming and crazy but this is a better choice for your health and for our environment.  Why give baby wipe manufacturers money when they are using toxic ingredients in their products?  Better yet, why expose your family’s skin to cancer-causing solvents and endocrine-disrupting chemicals?

**Note** I always keep some extra liquid alongside my wipes, because I use some of the liquid to cleanse our little one’s tush or our hands while we are on the go.

**Travel Note**You can carry your cloth pieces with you in one of the containers or bags mentioned above and place your liquid mixture in a spray bottle.  When it is time for a facial cleanse or diaper change just spray your wipes with the desired amount and use them right away.  If you’re at home set dirty wipes aside in a wash pail with some soap, baking soda, and vinegar and launder later in the day in hot water. If you are out and about, place the soiled wipes in a sealed bag until you get home.
