I bet when you think of harmful foods, sugar is probably not what first comes to mind.  But you would be surprised to know that of all the foods consumed today, refined sugar is considered to be one of the most harmful.

“In 1997 Americans devoured 7.3 billion pounds of candy. Americans spent an estimated $23.1 billion dollars on candy and gum. The average American consumed a record 27.3 pounds of candy and gum in the same year-the equivalent of about six regular sized chocolate bars a week-marking the fifth consecutive year of increased demand.” (1)

We are now in 2010 and these numbers have not gotten any better.  But what most people don’t know is the tragic, sad and horrible story behind Big Sugar.  Because I work in the International Non-Profit Relief world I have seen first hand the abuse and tragedy related to the Big Sugar industry.  Yet we effortlessly consume and keep consuming this refined junk without weighing the effects on our health and the effects on our world.

Our children have fallen prey to the deceptive advertising and push of Big Sugar meanwhile modern-day slavery is taking place in fields bordering the DR and Haiti.  All for that sweet satisfaction which ultimately makes you sick.

Refined sugar is void of all nutrients, consequently, it causes the body to deplete its own stores of various vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. If sugar consumption is continued, an over-acid condition results and more minerals are needed from deep in the body to correct the imbalance. If the body is lacking the nutrients used to metabolize sugar, it will not be able to properly handle and rid itself of the poisonous residues so they will end up in the brain and nervous system where they will speed up cellular death.

Do yourself and your family a favor and stay away from the white stuff.  Not only is it like a drug in its effect on the body; but the dark mafia behind Big Sugar is not a cause you want to support.
