This morning I was feeling a little bit under the weather so my hubby made an organic green smoothie for us and handed me one in a large 20-ounce glass. Our little one was bouncing on my lap and lunged for my smoothie almost toppling it over.
People think I lie when I tell them that the kids drink anywhere from 1 to 3 green smoothies a day. Especially when baby sports green colored juice in his sippy cup. The first thing I hear is “yuck, what is that.”
But green smoothies can be an important source of vitamins and nutrients for everyone, especially children. Greens help build the immune system, improve digestion, beautify the skin, gently cleanse, provide essential nutrients, minerals, living enzymes and vitamins that your body needs to function properly. These past few years (during the week) we have opted for nutritious herbal, green and fruit smoothies on many occasions instead of breakfast. We have also complemented a healthy breakfast with a yummy green smoothie.
This is the very opposite of what most people do today. It is unfortunate that for decades people have thought that eating a large breakfast full of refined carbs and sugars was a good thing. But it is not recommended for a few reasons. One of the most important reasons is that when you get up in the morning your body should begin the purging process to get rid of all the waste from the day or night before. Your digestive system wants to evacuate but you just shove more processed food into it which is like putting your finger over the end of a hose that is turned on. The only thing you’re accomplishing is a yucky buildup of waste and toxins that can begin to make you sick over time.
Don’t stuff your body with junk. Instead, opt for life building foods that will energize your cells and prevent disease.
Enjoy a green smoothie at least once a day and be sure to “raise your glass” and share with others! Just be sure to chew your smoothies. Doing so activates digestive enzymes which is important for proper food digestion.
Here is my simple recipe for making a 100% organic green smoothie that is baby and kid approved, although some adults may make a face or two!
My Organic Baby Green Smoothie
2 cups Organic Coconut Milk or Almond Milk cold (homemade to avoid toxic emulsifiers)
¾ cup organic frozen mangoes
1 organic banana
½ teaspoon of organic coconut oil
2 teaspoons of organic wheatgrass powder by Amazing Grass
1 cup of organic green lettuce mix (washed)
1 teaspoon of organic chlorophyll (optional)
5 organic raw dates for added sweetness (optional)
Place all the ingredients in your blender in the same order mentioned above. Blend until smooth and enjoy.
Be sure to sport your green mustache with your kids, they’ll think its cool!
May the green be with you.
