New Paper – Mast Cell Activation May Explain Many Cases of Chemical Intolerance

I’m so excited to share this new paper with you today. It is a topic I’m very passionate about because so many people I know are suffering with debilitating mast cell disease symptoms. From anaphylaxis to extreme food intolerances, mast cell activation syndrome and or disorder can be a life altering diagnosis.

“The new study by researchers at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, also known as UT Health San Antonio, as well as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the AIM Center for Personalized Medicine, supports mast cell activation syndrome and mediator release (MCAS) as an underlying mechanism for chemical intolerance.” Source 

When discussing this new study with Dr. Claudia Miller, she said the following:
“It represents a real breakthrough in our understanding of the role of environmental exposures in complex multisystem illnesses accompanied by new intolerances that develop following acute or repeated exposure to pesticides, implants, mold, combustion products, solvents, etc.”

What’s the big deal with Mast Cells anyway? As Dr. Claudia Miler explains, “Xenobiotic exposures can sensitize tissue-based mast cells. Once sensitized, they are capable of releasing cascades of inflammatory and other mediators with minimal provocation.” 

What are Mast Cells?
“Mast cells are considered the immune system’s “first responders.” They originate in the bone marrow and migrate to the interface between tissues and the external environment where they then reside. When exposed to “xenobiotics,” foreign substances like chemicals and viruses, they can release thousands of inflammatory molecules called mediators. This response results in allergic-like reactions, some very severe.” Source
This release of inflammatory mediators can begin a sequence of events that can cause full body reactions, many of them quite disabling. 

“Mast cells are long-lived tissue-resident cells with an important role in many inflammatory settings including host defense to parasitic infection and in allergic reactions. Mast cells are located at the boundaries between tissues and the external environment, for example, at mucosal surfaces of the gut and lungs, in the skin and around blood vessels. Mast cells are key players in the inflammatory response as they can be activated to release a wide variety of inflammatory mediators, by many different antigens including allergenspathogens and physiological mediators.” Source

Why is this Study Important?
Studies like this open up the door for medical professionals around the world to begin to understand the underlining mechanisms that can cause someone to develop chemical intolerances and sensitivities, but it doesn’t stop there. There are multiple health conditions and disabling symptoms that can be connected to mast cell activation syndrome but doctors aren’t looking in the right places. More often than not, patients are gaslighted, ridiculed and made to feel as if it is all in their head. This archaic way of thing has to stop and studies like this one can pave the way for change to continue until a paradigm shift occurs. 

“Advancing our understanding of mast cells offers the potential to predict, prevent and treat many exposure-induced illnesses,” said Claudia S. Miller, MD, MS, professor emeritus in the department of family and community medicine at UT Health San Antonio, and lead author of the study. “This understanding opens a new window between medicine and environmental exposures.” Source
